"Death hung in the air." For the longest time, I didn't understand that line. To convey a feeling of foreboding. A short sentence of filler text that had no meaning other than "something terrible is going to happen." I get it, now. It's a sense of dread. Maybe the smell of dried blood, some small detail being off, or just a gut feeling. Who knew. But when she placed her hand on the doorknob, I could already sense what was going to happen.
