Rowan was a member of the flock, the oldest but not the leader. As her and the flock were escaping the underground lab, Rowan made the choice to sacrifice herself to give them the chance to escape. But as she was leading the Erasers away, they caught up to her and she was badly wounded. 

Two brothers out to find some animals stumbled upon an injured teenager and took her back to their turtle ship so she could get medical attention.
