When Signe was young, Earl Ragnar banished her father Kjartan and half-brother Sven from his land. But instead of condemning her to the same fate, he took the girl he was already fond of and raised her alongside his own children, as well as the Saxon slaves Brida and Uhtred.

Years later when Earl Rangnar is killed, a devastated and enraged Signe joins Uhtred on his quest to reclaim his birthright and to kill the man who took their family from them.

However, from what little I have been able to find in my research, it is likely that circa 900 c.e., the Irish and Albans/Scots (and the few remaining Picts) spoke a version of Old Gaelic that was similar enough to be understood between the two. So when I reference anyone speaking Gaelic (vs Irish), it is with that in mind. Basically - don't come for me if it's all too fantastical. This is fanfic, it's supposed to be fantasy!
