In a world of superheroes and supervillains, citizens are overlooked and ignored. Damage to their selves or property is seen as secondary compared to the lives that the heroes lead. And the people who suffer the most are the ones no one talks about.
In this world of extra normal people, it is a rulebook by a normal person that brings hope back to the people. Ruby Davis (as she is known at work) has made it her year-long mission to help people avoid the dangers of supervillains (without putting herself in danger of course). The question is, how long can she keep it up without attracting attention to herself?

Shortlisted for the Open Novella Contest 2019 • Being a Supervillain is tough. Between managing a secret lair and making sure your mom doesn't stop loving you because you keep telling everyone she's dead, it's a really hard business to be good at? Add to that, the fact that somehow you got arrested because your cat sitter didn't take the day off and then you go around expressing your unconditional love for pancakes in a Super holding cell because technically they can't put you in a proper prison and you don't really have a choice because lawyers are expensive? And then, you realise your best friend is plotting go take over your spot as the greatest villain there ever was? Okay, maybe not the greatest, but you do come pretty close to it! To top it off, there's that one Superhero who's just so completely gorgeous, you couldn't imagine any harm coming to them? Because they're just that precious? I guess that makes me a Supervillain with minor time travel superpowers and a huge crush on a not so powerful Superhero? And all you have to do is protect yourself and everyone you love from your ex best friend/sidekick --because let's face it that's the highest level of praise for a wretched traitor here--and you also have to get out of Super Holding somehow? Jill and her bestfriend Hailey decided to live together when they moved to Florida. What they didn't know is who this house used to belong to. Jill accidentally opened the secret passage under the house and the two girls then had bigger issues. There was a message from Briar. All the heroes from Florida were gone. They left and since many years had gone by, people soon forgot about them. A new evil is rising and the state is defenseless. So, Hailey and Jill took it upon themselves to find new heroes. I should be dead. At least, that's what the government officials told me in the super-secret lab where I woke up strapped to a mattress in a windowless room...Sound problematic to anyone else? Like I told the psychos experimenting on me, I've got zero clue how I got my new powers, but I'm sure-as-shit not going to let them turn me into a deadly weapon (or squeeze me into a spangly jumpsuit). Problem is, I'm not so great at controlling whatever the hell it is I've become...Not to mention I'm on the run from my country for a teensy-weensy act of treason while being chased by a shadowy masked mute who may or may not have superhuman abilities too (but is definitely stupid hot under his off-putting disguise).
