Ruth was expecting her first child with her husband, Joel. Unfortunately, for everyone involved, the virus she has been dealing with at work got out of hand. It ended the world as she knows it, both her world and the outside world. Ruth becomes separated from Joel and Sarah and spends the next twenty years searching for them as she works as a firefly near the Boston QZ.
When Ellie, an immune child, gets captured by Marlene. Ruth has a chance of a lifetime. To protect this sixteen-year-old child, fight off infection, finding Joel, and introducing him to his only living daughter, Artemis.
