Canada has a dark history concerning Indigenous children and institutions. The residential school system, established in the late 19th century and lasting until the 1990s, forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families, suppressing their cultural identity and subjecting them to abuse. The institutions, often run by religious organizations, aimed at assimilating Indigenous youth into Euro-Canadian culture. The devastating impact on generations of Indigenous people has been acknowledged by the Canadian government, with efforts underway to address the historical injustices and promote reconciliation. However, the scars of this dark chapter continue to affect Indigenous communities, highlighting the need for ongoing commitment to healing and understanding.
