to put it plainly, Zoe is not human. she is a inky, mostrous mutant that accidentally murdered her parents when she was 18. it's also the reason that she was taken to the Crestwood facility, where it's meant to be a semi-permanent home for mutants who have trouble controlling the powers they possess.
for the most part, the facility is a nice place. it treats its residents with respect, uses great techniques to help them out with their powers, and best of all, no one gets hurt. but Zoe just can't seem to fit in. she's going to try, but her rising guilt of her past actions might not let her...
