Mana, daughter of Amenhotep, the flighty thirteen-year-old who only wanted to learn magic alongside her best friends, is now queen of Egypt, and, according to the words of Aknadin, her chief regent, she is to be married to the previous king's killer, the cruel and manipulative sorcerer Menes. It is a gesture of peace, she is told, but Mana knows better: she is a pawn and a prisoner.
But Mana cannot tamely accept her fate. She is kept awake by dreams that reassure her that her beloved king is still out there, alive. But she can't fight Menes head-on. Like a snake in the grass, she must be subtle and patient. Because Mana quickly learns she must safeguard not only her life, but another one of infinite value. One that could change everything.
