In the second of twelve districts, a girl exists.

She doesn't live, not anymore.

She just exists.

The girl's name is Aurora, and her father has been diagnosed with cancer for... maybe half a year now. She's not sure how long, exactly. She used to be known for her sharp memory, but now the days just blur into each other.

All she knows is that it's a losing battle.

And she must say goodbye.

Consumed by the solitary war that she has waged against depression since her father's diagnosis, Aurora yearns for an escape. For something to finally bring her slow spiral into the abyss to an end. What better way is there to make an exit that won't raise questions than to volunteer for the 60th annual Hunger Games?

Aurora plans to go down in the history books as one of the nameless tributes who dies in the bloodbath. Ironic, really, given that she's classic Career material. But then the currents shift, and suddenly, the only one standing between Aurora and her long-awaited end is Severus.

When Kira Blackwood's name is reaped, she knows she's screwed. How is she supposed to survive in a fight to death with twenty-three other tributes, all of whom want to get out alive as much as she does? Not to mention, the thought of killing somebody twists her stomach into all sorts of unnatural shapes. Despite secretly training for the Games in the cow pastures surrounding her home, and being pretty handy with a knife, Kira's kind heart may be the thing that holds her back the most. However, as she navigates through the opulent world of the Capitol, and then the arena itself, Kira starts to realize that maybe, just maybe, it's not the dead she should pity, but the Victor. After all, no one ever really wins the Hunger Games. Survives, sure. But wins? Never. ~~+~~ Please Note: This is set in a world where the 2nd Rebellion failed. All usurpers were executed (except those pesky star-crossed lovers, who knows where they ran off to), District 13 was destroyed for good (but District 12 was rebuilt, on the basis that the Capitol realized that it actually really needed coal), and the Hunger Games were reinstated. Disclaimer: I don't own any of the rights to the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, or to the Lionsgate adaptation of her books. (Obviously.) All characters of my creation are copyrighted. ~~+~~ Thank you so much for reading this, it really means so much to me!!! :) I hope you enjoy, and love it as much as I do! (Also sorry for the length, I sort have this thing for details... and long, run-on sentences... and long, run-on sentences stuffed with details...) Please note: This story is technically incomplete, bc I still want to write a few more scenes after the Games like the interviews and stuff, maybe of the Victory Tour, but I've marked it as complete bc...junior year of high school. Ain't no way that I'm finishing this anytime soon. Hopefully over Christmas break I'll get back around to it.
