A year has passed since the fall of Middengard. With the conspiracy against the Empress crushed under the Vangen's heel, an unlikely peace has fallen over the Empire. But the Empress does not sit idle. Now is the time for the licking of wounds and the settling of old scores, starting with the Vangen itself.

For twenty five years Regis served the Empire faithfully, only to abandon his post and flee back to Danic, his frozen homeland in the north. Captain Libro has kept the Empress's vengeance at bay for as long as possible, but even her wrath cannot be stifled forever. With orders to bring him back to meet the Empresses judgment, the Vangen ride for Danic and capture the one man to desert the guard and live to tell the tale.

But all is not as it was in the frozen north. A new King has risen, spreading darkness over the land and cutting off all contact with the outside world. Regis soon discovers the old life he'd left behind holds little recognition in the present, and yet the ghosts of the past still haunt him to this very day.

Six hundred years ago, the world-- reborn from Ragnarok-- was nearly destroyed in an Uprising led by the Great Usurper, the Lord of All Evil, Vandr. The nine heroic Drakahalr rose to stop him, but could only imprison him before their deaths. Prophecy foretells of a time when they shall both return, and throw the world into a mighty war... Jarl wants to be an einherjar, Alf a bard, and more than anything, Bjalla wishes to one day become a dragonrider-- a thought her siblings scoff at. Jarl is strong, but undisciplined. Alf is smart, but her overconfidence leads to many mistakes. Bjalla is too weak, barely capable of lifting her sword, let alone swing it. And now she's found herself intrigued by the dangerous rogue Hrafnfar, the daemish dragonrider, against all of her mother's warnings. Their biggest problem is trusting their teammates. Thankfully, there's six months of training before the fights begin... but a little voice inside Bjalla's head that sounds horribly like the duke that imprisoned her keeps insisting that she will NEVER be good enough.
