This is a novel in verse about the main character, Onyx. Their mother died protecting Onyx when two men were trying to rob them. Their father always blamed them for it. Their father started abusing them. It started out only when he was angry but soon became a normal occurrence. It got so bad that they would do anything to make it stop. Even take their own life. Their best friend, Emma, was recently in a car crash. It killed both her parents and put her in a coma. Emma was very protective over Onyx, and went to great lengths to keep them safe, even taking a blow from their father. With her gone, Onyx is a mess. They end up partaking in some experiment to make enough money to keep Emma alive. The book starts out during the first "Test"
I will put trigger warnings on the top of each chapter but the main ones are abuse and slight homophobia. If you do not feel comfortable with these things then I suggest that you don't read it.

When the notes lead her to the bodily remains of six-year-old Mary Drake, the first of thirteen children who went missing three years ago, Angie finds herself caught up in her own investigation and quickly starts to believe that Mary's bones aren't as dead as they seem to be...
