Wilful Lies

"She spent a year loving him.
He spent two years breaking her."

One year.
One contract.
Two hearts that were never supposed to break.

I married him for my inheritance.
He married me for the CEO position.

At least, that's what we told ourselves.

We signed the papers.
We set the terms.
One year. No feelings. No messy goodbyes.

He was cold, and distant - a man made of sharp edges and ambition.
I told myself I hated him.
I told myself I could survive him.
I told myself I would walk away when the contract ended - heart intact, untouched.

But somewhere between the lies and the stolen glances -
I fell for him anyway.
