"Cassie, look at my plane!" Garrett cheers as he flies it around, "That's cool!" I encourage him. "You excited to go camping?" Mike asks as he takes my bag and loads it into the truck, "No, I'm scared of the dark and my mom and dad aren't coming." I confess, "I'll protect you." He says heroically, "Mom, can Cassie and I sleep in the same tent?" Mike asks and his mom chuckles, "Sure, Garrett too." "Okay!" He's excited, "See, now I can protect you." "And me!" Garrett shouts as he climbs into the car.

"Mike, are you okay?" I whisper to him on our way back home from Nebraska, "I was supposed to protect him." He says, choking back tears. "I promise I'll help you find out who took him." I say before resting my head against his shoulder.

The car that drove away with Garrett looked familiar but I can't remember why. His parents seemed awfully calm. Why?
