The year is 1912, the Second Great Pokemon War started, most trainers and normal people at the age of 18 signed up or get drafted into their region's military to fight for their region.
A boy from a small town in Galar, John Schofield, has lost his father during the battle of Shalour City in the Kalos region. This saddens but also encourages him to enlist in the Galorian Army.

N's son Neptune has long accepted that his own son died in tragic circumstances. So when he gets an unexpected call from a stranger in Galar, claiming that his son is alive and well, he doesn't know what to think. This unidentified man also claims to be a member of the criminal syndicate Cipher. It's suspected that they aided Team Plasma's last revival, but why would even Team Plasma know the location of a baby who supposedly drowned when he was only one week old?
