The overall plot of the story: vangs and motherborns (vampires and demons) have endeavored to destroy the humans entirely from the beginning of time, it is the year 1848, not that a new comer could discern the date from the eclectic technology the humans manufacture and the humans do not have time to keep track of the date anyway for their attention is too occupied with fighting off the never ending assault by the motherborns and vangs.
