Rose Jackson has a strange mind. Vivid hallucinations haunt her everyday life, and at first they weren't always bad. Then, things took a turn for the worse. They demanded her blood and she gave it to them almost daily. Her mother left when she was 12, and she doesn't see much of her family. Her father is a drug addict and has a new whore staying with them every other month. Finally, one of Rose's old hallucinations, Rabbit White, reappears. Rabbit convinces Rose that it is time for her to go, and Rose complies. With a kiss goodbye, Rose is sent tumbling down a tower to her death... but she doesn't stay dead. Awoken by vampire venom, Rose -- now holding the last name of White -- must live a full year as a half vampire and decide if life is still worth living. She has three options: 1) let herself become a blood donor for the other vampires; 2) live a mortal, but extended, life as a half vampire; 3) become a full vampire and live in the night. Rose's life is now spiraling down a gravitational path, living in a secret underground society cloaked by magic. Darkness clouds her mind and odd happenings continue to disrupt her attempts to fit in. She must discover herself and break through the darkness before time runs out.
