Athena was orphaned during the rebel war. Adopted by Casca Highbottom, she was able to go to school in the Capital of Panem. When Athena is assigned as a mentor to help the tribute Treech win the games, she finally understands why her father hated them so much. 

Coriolanus Snow met Athena once during the war; he liked her back then but avoided her as a classmate. How is it possible that the 12th Hunger Games, a game filled with so much blood, brought them together in the most poisonous way?
