The Mikaelson's had been running from their father ever since they became vampires, although, Elijah, kol and Rebekah had been shoved in coffins with daggers in their hearts. Once they arrive at the place that was famous for "animal attacks" they settled down not knowing if they were going to have to run again soon.
Damon and Elena are together, but eventually he gets jealous of the time Elena spends with Elijah as they became pretty close over time, that leads to a breakup and Damon's humanity going off.
Later on in the story, Enzo appears and helps Damon turn his humanity back on, Bonnie saw the good in his dark past and eventually, they fell in love.
Caroline was with Tyler until he ran to help a werewolf pack in the mountains, she gets close with klaus but their frenemie situation didn't work out, they became friends after she got with Stefan.
