I'd like to think that the whole world lives normal lives. Everyone is nourished, everyone has enough, everyone is happy. I've come to learn that that is a vision my family has never foreseen. It is a goal we will never achieve as a whole. We are too fragile. We are too weak. We don't try hard enough to reach a state of optimism. We never will.

Braelyn is a sixteen-year-old girl living in rural Wisconsin. Her father is an alcoholic and her mother is barely ever home. Braelyn's only hope is her older brother, Bailey, who gives her all the faith in the world, and an extremely enthusiastic boy who moves to Braelyn's school. Will Braelyn be able to mend her torn relationship with her father? Will she and Bailey be able to go to college with their family in debt?
