When Pristina and Oswald had found their youngest and only surviving son shaking as he sat hunched over their piles of dust, it felt like the world had ended, like nothing would ever be right again and there was no way they could ever be anything other than devastated. Gaster was absolutely destroyed by his grief and terror, though, and it added more weight to her and Oswald's pain, watching him break over and over again.
