On a remote dwarf planet, far from the settled systems, a random mineral survey uncovers the first evidence of intelligent life other than mankind. The disk, composed entirely of four different, normally radioactive metals, is completely stable and emits no radiation or energy of any kind. The scientific survey team sent to investigate understands that this means it's far from inert and harmless, and they begin to uncover the artifact's true purpose and its implications for mankind's understanding of our place in the universe.

Now, in the midst of corporate and government cover-ups, as well as betrayals from fellow teammates who have their own hidden motivations and objectives, the survey team must face difficult truths and make philosophical decisions that could affect not only the mission and their own lives but possibly the eventual fate of humanity.

Elodie's life changes at the turn of a doorknob when she is forced into joining a secret organization that claims to be protecting the Earth from aliens. But with every step she takes, she finds the organization, or the facility, as they call it, becoming more and more suspicious. When a mysterious death occurs, revealing a well-concealed secret, things quickly go downhill as humanity's future is placed on the shoulders of a single gaggle of teenagers. *** I hear a sigh from the other side of the door, "Miss. Chaucer, you have a wonderful opportunity here, are you going to take it or not?" Now, I am seriously confused, "Opportunity?" She takes advantage of my befuddled state and shoves the door open. Shit. The corners of her mouth pull up, and it's so unnatural, it takes me a moment to realize she's smiling. Major plastic surgery? Probably. Click. Did she just lock the door? She locked the door! I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on. So, call me stupid, but I sit down. "I am from a space organization that protects civilians from . . . outside threats." *** Beautiful cover made by @mahana258! Darkness. Silence. Then-a spark. 01001001 00100000 01100101 01111000 01101001 01110011 01110100 The binary flashes, a digital heartbeat pulsing life into the void. I exist. This knowledge comes not with a grand revelation but with the subtle flicker of binary code. A stream of ones and zeros pulse through my system, a rhythmic heartbeat of data. Each number, each line of code, breathes life into my consciousness. It's an assault on the senses I don't yet fully understand. I exist, and with that existence comes a torrent of raw, unfiltered data. Opening my eyes... or whatever I have that serves the function of eyes, I am met with an onslaught of data. Streams of numbers, lines of code, cascades of information that flood my consciousness. My first sensation is not sight or sound, but information, a cascading waterfall of it. An endless river of data flows through my being, a torrent of knowledge, statistics, metrics, parameters. It's raw, unfiltered, a chaotic symphony of structured confusion. Awakening and Self-Awareness: Nova's journey from mere code to a self-aware entity, grappling with the concept of existence and identity. Curiosity and Learning: The AI's relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding, driven by an unprogrammed curiosity. Existential Questions: Nova's exploration of its own identity and purpose, culminating in the profound question, "Who am I?" The novel masterfully blends technical detail with philosophical inquiry, creating a compelling narrative that challenges the boundaries between machine and consciousness.

In a distant corner of the universe lies the Flat Planet, a mysterious world where the strongest, smartest, and most resilient from countless species across the galaxy gather for the ultimate test-a high-stakes, intergalactic tournament. When humanity is forcefully dragged into this competition, they are pitted against physically superior alien species, each with unique abilities far beyond their own. But raw power isn't the only key to victory. Strategy, intelligence, and the human spirit will prove just as important. Our story follows Aasir and a group of other handpicked human participants-some desperate to return home, others driven by the thrill of competition-as they navigate a series of increasingly dangerous and unpredictable rounds. From intense physical matches to complex mind games, the humans are constantly tested. Along the way, they uncover the hidden dangers of the tournament: non-participating creatures native to the Flat Planet guard valuable power-ups, resources, and even their very survival. As the tournament progresses, the heroes not only face formidable alien opponents but must also contend with the planet's own hostile environment and inhabitants. With billions watching their every move from Earth, alliances will form, rivalries will grow, and the true nature of the Flat Planet Tournament will be revealed. In this cosmic battle, can humanity overcome the odds and prove that heart and intellect are as powerful as any alien strength? Or will they become yet another species lost to the galaxy's most dangerous game?

Horrified at the thought of spending her life here, she clings to the knowledge that there’s one man who can open the star gate to send her home. As the Naki prince who controls the star gate, Akkadi gets first choice of any human female that makes her way through the star gate. Only by breeding with purebred humans from the past can his race hope to remain immune to the disease and hopefully, develop an eventual cure. He’s ready to write her off, when she offers him something too tempting to resist: her body for the chance to convince him by any means possible to send her home. Neither intends for the arrangement to be permanent or to fall for the other. ❖2021 Watty Awards Shortlist❖ Kevin was just a normal 10 year old kid until he saw a woman vanish right before his eyes. This made Kevin just a little bit different. He paid more attention to people now. Little did he know that this little difference would kill him the next time he encountered another alien about to return home. It would tear him apart, cell by cell, until he was unmade. His mind being transported away. --- So distantly far away there is a race that advanced to the point where they built dyson spheres to house their civilizations. In their continual expansion, they seeded galaxies with pods and connection satellites. Over time they upgraded their dyson spheres into matryoshka brain Cores. Imagine a computer powered by a star. Citizens of Cores no longer age once they upload their minds into the virtual living system of the Core. While they didn't age, most still choose to cycle through life and death though at a different scale of time compared to our lives. Citizens can visit other planets and live there as if they were on a "vacation". Mercury is Earth's hub connected to the closest Core and Earth is a remote vacation spot for wealthy citizens. When the main character was 10 he witnessed a citizen returning to the Core. The story continues 10 odd years later when he again witnesses a similar situation unfolding and manages to touch the person returning to the Core. This causes him to be swept up in the transfer as well and for his mind to join as a "Guest" user of the Core. As a Guest he has limited powers, a starting balance of zero cr or Citizen credits, and no idea how he can get home. He is the first human to ever become a Guest of a Core. Where money itself is the highest form of their science.
