Hello! This short story was written for an assignment I was given in which I had to write a continuation of a pre-existing story, so I just James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis", a story in which a young boy is introduced to his baby brother, Doodle, who has an abundance of physical health issues.
When Doodle is six, the older brother, in his own pride, selfishness, and immaturity, he leaves Doodle behind during a storm in an attempt to get him to actually run for himself (as he was physically incapable of doing so, and the older brother in his selfishness ignores Doodle's needs). Unfortunately, in his weak health, Doodle passes out and dies, his mouth bloodied. The older brother runs back to look for him and finds him crouched under a bush, dead. This story is a short continuation of that scene.
Doodle is referred to as a scarlet ibis, as earlier in the story, the brothers had watched one fall out of a tree to its death on the ground, twisted and bleeding all over. The older brother later refers to his deceased brother as his fallen scarlet ibis.
