In the vein of authors Kim Newman and H.P Lovecraft, this is a story that brings together genres and themes, into brand new territories.
Set in an alternate past of Gangsters and Gumshoes, caught in an unknowable, unstoppable game of cat and mouse, hurtling toward an end-game no-one could have predicted.
Mixing elements of mystery, thriller, horror and weird fiction, we are thrown into a story which soons begins to twist into contorted, skewed directions, uncontrollably hurtling towards a conclusion that will change everyone involved.
Originally written as part of the 10 SHORT OF 31 short story collection, released in October 2016, where every story was based upon a title provided by friends, peers and family - where every story was supposed to be written in a single day, a single sitting - with minimum planning or preparation. Based on the title alone.
This story was dedicated to my friend Jim Partridge who gave me the title.

The Price of Silence
"You don't have to do this." Lane whispered, her voice catching. "Not my call." Officer Casey hissed, his breath hot in her face. Another round of dizziness sliced through her and she slumped over, squeezing her eyes shut with a moan. Her shaky legs felt like they might give out. Again, Officer Casey grabbed a bicep, dragging her along. She only made it two steps before her knees buckled. The frustration radiated off of him as he seethed again, "Walk." "I'm trying." She stiffened when Officer Casey reaching down and gripped her by the waist, grunting in pain when he lifted her and dropped her onto his shoulder. "S-stop-" Lane cried out pathetically, writhing like a worm on a hook. She was cut off by a painful squeeze to her ankle, a hiss flying past her lips before she could hold it in. "You done?" He asked harshly, his grip on the delicate bones tight as a vice. A wave of desperation hit her and forced her to still, releasing a breath that felt like it cost her something. Her brain told her to fight, but every muscle screamed at her to stop. Her mind whirled as another horrible reality set in -- she was being kidnapped. ~ All Lane is trying to do is survive in a world that's already failed her. After a childhood spent bouncing between homes, a steady job, a place to lay her head, and a beater to take her from Point A to Point B were the small things she'd fought for. Lane was trying -- she really was. Her life was finally hers, and she intended to keep it that way. But of course, as the saying goes, "Men plan, God laughs." All it took was a glance. Lane froze. And then she ran. It wasn't supposed to be her problem. But the moment those eyes caught hers, she was thrust into a world she'd always tried to avoid. The life that she fought so hard for was about to be turned on its head. And she'll have to do more than keep quiet to make it out alive.

Part time tales
each part will take us through a new world, we will traverse multiple genres and plots in this short story anthology book. There will be mystery and intrigue as each of these tales is told to the reader. No.1 - a walk on the wrong street : we are lost in the world if not for sanity, out of control some might say, and those with no "control" those are dangerous folk, people who shouldn't be permitted to walk amongst us, yet they do, how do they function in this world balanced by sanity? You may ask, the answer is simple, hunt. No.2 - The Motor Way : two men dragged into a fight for survival in a seemingly alive wood, that sends demonic creatures after them, to hunt and kill them as they try to find there way back. No.3 - The interrogation : when a small group of friends is dragged into a police station for a crime none of them admit to its all a matter of time before the truth like most things is revealed. No.4 - the feather : a short righting of a person dealing with the moral dilemma of mercy killing an injured bird. No.5 - Traffic : the story of a lawful man in a lawless place. A desperate sheriff turns to crime in order to support his ailing son, and his troubled wife all the while he comes to terms with his own inability to addiquatly hold up the law he dedicated his life to. No.6 - Ology : a zoo keeper has dark secrets, as do we all. But when his secrets strole into the public affairs for how much longer can he cover up his outlandish experimentation. No.7 - Backgammon : a 1950s detective finds himself entangled in a web of crimes, or crimes thwarted by a vigilante, now with all eyes on him he has to think, is this outlaw better or worse for the dangerous streets, or is he even more use than the officers he work with. No.8 - Moth : a lighthouse worker beguins expireancing strange things, is this due to his isolation or is something afoot, something evil... something dangerous. TIME TESTAMENT
William Testament is a mild mannered insurance man until his life becomes a series of unfortunate events, beginning with a horrific car accident. The histories lurking there aren't the ones we read about in history books and some of them are infected with the future. The underworld is full of high-tech gangsters, artificial super-intelligences, and witchcraft wielding criminals spreading rumors and illusions. Rumors of a time-machine underground where the past and future collide. William is determined to bring order to this dark chaos growing beneath the city.
