Years ago I handed out the first chapter of a fantasy story in a creative writing class and someone said “I hate fantasy. It always has strange creatures I don’t understand.” I was too polite to ask “which end of the horse are you having trouble understanding?” This is one of those kinds of fantasy stories. No elves. No orcs. But it does offer horses, adventures, a smattering of magic and perhaps an interfering old goddess.
