In a kingdom where the use of magic is outlawed and punishable by death, a kingdom that is still terrorised by a powerful sorcerer despite the laws, Aurelie has no choice but to seek the help of the worst one when her brother falls sick with a magical illness that has only a magical cure - the infamous Dark One.

Of course, the cure doesn't come without a payment. He wants something - the King's crown. And given that is the only way to save her brother, she agrees. But in navigating her way around the King and his court to get to his crown, she discovers that things aren't as they seem, and perhaps it isn't the magic beings who are evil, but rather something in the heart of the King's council.

Aurelie soon has to deconstruct an entire belief system, especially when she discovers that the secrets of magic may extend further than she realises. In the end, she's left questioning her reality, and whether the villain of her story really is the villain.
