The night before her wedding, Staff Sergeant Lyla Lane is killed in what initially appears to be just another military mishap and her heart is given to Anna Roberts, a young police officer who was placed on the waiting list for a heart transplant after being wounded in the same accident. As she recovers from her injuries, Anna quickly realizes that she and Lyla share far more than a heart, for the Staff Sergeant's soul is entwined with hers, the very essence of their beings sharing one heart and their thoughts sharing one mind.

When Lyla becomes convinced that her death wasn't an accident, she persuades Anna to enlist the help of Brian Anderson, a San Diego police detective and Lane's grieving fiancée, in hopes that solving her murder will allow her to move on from this world to the next.

With emotions running high and tension growing, relationships shatter and dark secrets are revealed, leaving life-long friendships and romantic endeavors tainted as a dying woman whispers, "Trust no one."
