In the dreamlike world of Ex Nihilo, the human kingdom of Ædel has destroyed the environment. In doing so, it drew the wrath of the Càileachd, an ancient race of powerful beings with close ties to Nature. Now, the two races are on the brink of war. Hunt, the young Càileachd crown prince, feels that bloodshed is not the answer, and deserts his homeland with the ultimate hope of stopping the war and reversing the destruction of the environment. He has a fateful encounter with Shirota, a human boy of mysterious origins, and believes him to be the person mentioned in an ancient prophecy of the Càileachd - a person destined to prevent calamity.

The two young boys band together in aid of humankind, and embark on a quest to the kingdom of Ædel. The journey takes them into the kingdom of Joseon - medieval Korea - where they encounter wondrous sceneries, various challenges, and mighty foes.
