Kirishima has always been seen as a joyful and energetic boy who loves anything manly. This would include one of the manliest people he knows, Bakugou Katsuki. He continuously pushes him away, which lead Kirishima to think that their friendship is purely platonic. He is fine with this, however. For love can't physically hurt, right? He slowly begins to realize this is not true when bloodied roses and petals begin to fall from his mouth.
