Violet Gray is a poor, lonely girl with a troubled life, while her counterpart, Eclaire "Claire" White, is wealthy, popular, and athletic. Midwest's East River High has a cruel social hierarchy that thrives on drama and rumors. Based on that, the pair already has negative feelings about one another. Claire believes that Violet is an unkempt creep, and Violet thinks Claire is a stupid, narcissistic whore. However, the opposites properly meet for the first time, due to a partner project.

They don't connect very well at first, but when they finally open up about their personal lives, a complicated relationship blossoms. The duo sticks together and helps each other through their vastly different issues, whether it's shitty boyfriends, dysfunctional parents at home, getting revenge on your traitor best friend, or simply just trying to be a better person.

In a nutshell: Violet realizes that balancing your shitty home life, social life, and a situationship is NOT for the weak.
