When in town one day getting supplies, Ben runs into an old acquaintance from before he went to sea. He invites her and her three daughters to stay on the Ponderosa until they can get settled elsewhere since her oldest daughter is Virginia City's new schoolteacher. While catching up on the past with this friend, he realizes that it feels like all those years that they were apart never happened and that they just picked up where they left off.
