Every year, hundreds of thousands of people go missing around the world. Many will never be found.
Varenka presses herself against the smooth, cold wall of their stunted wooden house, hearing a huge gray humanoid creature trotting twenty centimeters away from her. Its long claws touch the glass and leave deep scratches. Varya tries not to breathe. For the first time in her five years of life, she feels such a dank all-consuming fear. This time she knows she won't be able to pinch herself and wake up, because everything that is happening now is happening in reality.
The monster peeks through the window, its eyes huge and glowing red meet the blue frightened eyes of Varenka's mom, huddled against the wall across from her daughter. Mom clamps her hand over her mouth and stares motionless at the shattering glass and the huge creature, covered in thick wrinkled skin, approaching her. Its long arm grabs the young woman by the neck, sharp claws dig into her flesh, and trickles of dark blood begin to glisten on the pale, soft skin, reflecting the light of the moon.
Mama looks at Varenka, ready to rush to her and scream, and shakes her head faintly. Varenka doesn't need to scream, she doesn't need this creature to know that there is a little girl here, otherwise Varenka too may meet her father's fate. The woman's blue eyes begin to see worse and worse, they are covered with tears of pain and fear, but she does not allow herself to scream, not until she sees a gray clawed hand reaching out from the darkness of the house to her little girl.

I imagine him as he is now, a cold echo of himself-a captive god, shackled to the ground he once knew well. For him, and for me, time crawls in the same sluggish circle. I picture the smallness of the space we put him in, and wonder if he remembers like I do. She was always drawn to storms, much like how lightning is drawn to the sky. Even at a young age, little Azura would stand beneath the thunderclouds that often visited the Sky'Lands during their journey across the Crystallin Sea, singing in a dead tongue. The chaotic beauty of the storms gave her solace, a stark contrast to the suffocating control of her makeshift family. Despite what had been promised, Azura couldn't help but feel a certain coldness each time a storm moved on without her. A coldness that only grew stronger and more present with each passing season, leaving her torn between the safety of familiarity and a longing for what lay beyond the open sea. Change had always taken something from her, bringing fear and loss of what had once been familiar. Facing change alone was terrifying, especially from the perspective of a gifted girl who had been isolated all her life. From the moment he was born, Damien's life had never been his own. Orphaned amidst the lower class and considered property of the Crown, it seemed his future had been set in stone, predetermined by those born with silver blood. To work arduously with his head held low and his mouth sealed shut until death would come for him. A death that seemed mockingly out of reach. Scars covered his body, some inflicted by the hands of the upper class, while others he had done to himself, as there was no such thing as a free slave in the Kingdom of Dunstan as long as the Royals lived. --------------------------------------------------- As of 2024, this will be the official place for my story. (74,890 words) The wind rushed past me as my wings beat against the night sky. I noticed a copse of trees up ahead. I slowed to a stop, talons clutching a low-hanging branch. I looked beyond the trees and a pair of glowing golden eyes met my own. Wolf eyes. My eyes widened in fear as I took off. I dodged the trees in my path, but one branch snapped on my wing. My vision blurred, pain lacing through my wing. I continued to flap my wings, clinging desperately to the notion I would make it out alive. More than one wolf was chasing me, their paws a staccato on the ground. They would catch up. They would devour me. I tried to stay in the air, but the pain was unbearable. I fell to the ground, fluttering down like a dead leaf. I snapped my eyes open. Breathing heavily, I sat up. My room shifted in and out of focus as my eyes adjusted. When I was little, my father always told me that dreams were just my imagination, that people were never chased by wolves, and people certainly could never be birds. Vera Stone is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in a small Louisiana town by the bayou. Small, boring, where nothing ever happens. Or so she and her friends think. One night the hidden darkness surrounding their town and their lives comes to the surface. Will Vera and her friends figure out the secrets hidden through their town's history before it's too late?
