nina salvador moved away from smallville before the meteor shower in 1989. because of her dad, alejandro being in the military, they had to move around a lot. but smallville was the place they stayed around for the longest. eventually they had to leave again, move to another state and another state and another. 
    
    nina, and her mother, mariah were growing exhausted from moving around and wanted to stay in one place. when you're moving around a lot, it's difficult to make friends or stay on top of work. because some states have different curriculums while others are different. so mariah finally convinced alejandro to move back to smallville, kansas to have her daughter be situated and live a normal life. but moving back to smallville after the events of the meteor shower, is different.
