lucy gray baird finds herself thrust into the 10th hunger games after being reaped. amidst listening to her mentor, coriolanus' advice to staying alive, she notices sejanus plinth, who's one of the mentors in this year's hunger games. he's different from the other mentors she's seen and met, and is curious to know more.
on the other side of the capitol, sejanus grapples with the complexities of his upbringing in being district-born and becomes increasingly disenchanted with the thought of being a mentor in this year's hunger games. before the games begin, he strikes up a friendship with lucy gray baird, which turns out to be start of a blossoming romance.
