The year is 1966. In the current climate, the rights of black Americans are at the forefront of public debate. Throughout the current divide, Lewis Johnson has juggled his hopes of higher education and acceptance of identity. While in school to get his medical license he is asked to intern at McLean Hospital. There he performs several shock therapies on individuals experiencing severe depressive episodes. However, during this, he has a bit of a midlife crisis as he wonders if his treatments are helping his patience. When offered a position he has no choice but to accept. While renting an apartment he begins a budding romance with his landlord's sun. Over the next 20 years, they form a quiet relationship.
