Books are meant to have
Broken spines
And bent pages,
Yellow splats of tears smearing
Ink
They are meant for smelling
And fraying,
Breaking to become whole.
Made for markings and
Half formed thoughts,
And hidden pictures,
And grocery lists,
And gently pressed flowers.
They are meant for breathing
And living and learning
More than the protected confines
Of a shelf.
