Kion was a warrior of the Wanugha tribe. In the 12th century, he won a crushing victory over the Almohads. But it was all too short-lived, even before the Caliphate had sent more troops. So, to save his tribe from misfortune, he exiled himself to Egypt to join Saladin's troops, but not without promising to bring back two tribeswomen kidnapped by the Normans: Nirmala Tanefzawit and her mother, the saintly Lalla Janna n'Tighra. On the way, he meets a beautiful Christian noblewoman, Rani de Lusignan, who, despite political and religious differences, falls in love with him after a life-threatening journey together.
