Facing the possibility of expulsion at school and forced to live with her estranged mother, Jamie Byrne was ending 1984 exactly as she knew she would. High, angry and entirely without passion. But when her curly-haired neighbour throws a cat toy at her window and drags her back into the world of the supernatural, she finds she might just have to get up and do something about it.
As Steve Harrington and a party of children are thrown into the mix, Jamie's life begins to stray further and further from the path she had once seen ahead. But when that path has always been overgrown by red vines and a festering fungus, she is forced to confront that these monstrous infections in Hawkins, Indiana and the constant state of misery she lives in may be more intertwined than she ever could have thought.
