It was Katie's 12 birthday. She though life was great. She always saw her friends depressed for one thing or another but she could never imagine her self thinking about suicide or cutting her self....she was so wrong.

After a couple of weeks, she saw her mom going on mystery trips. Receiving calls that made her "happy". Katie didn't understand what was going on but she decided not to ask. She wanted the truth no matter what it was but part of her told her it was better not finding out the truth. 

Her mom came out of work at 4:00pm but came home till 10:00pm

Her dad obviously didn't know what was going on. He worked day and night. He wanted Katie to have everything she wanted, since he came from a poor family that needed money and he didn't want his daughter suffering the same way he did when he was young. He bought her from cars to houses. Anything she wanted.

In Katie's mind a seed (idea) started growing bigger and bigger. She didn't know if it was possible for her mom to be......All Rights Reserved

And the carts had to be overflowing with toys. It was as if they had dreamed their entire lives of doing a "who cares how much it costs" shopping spree at Toys R Us for their children. Just recklessly spending on a bunch of STUFF. That was 2007. And then came 2008. But, more disturbing to me, was the impact it had on families. I think moms and dads lost themselves in providing stuff for their kids and not giving their kids time. And I saw the kids suffer because of it. So, I did a little research and a lot of observing and I wrote a mostly fictional story about an upper-middle class family in the OC. It explores (it simple terms) what was going on in the economy and what teenagers really want from their parents...
