Beans are nature's most perfect food. They are like tiny children waiting to be born. They can burst through the Spring soil and transform themselves into beanstalks that poke into the cloudlike homes of giants. Or if we're too anxious to wait for all that drama to unfold, we can simply eat them. We can eat them on a plate, in a bowl, on a knife, or a fork, or a spoon. Or maybe even in a soup with five or six mysterious beanlike stones that are also swimming in the gruel. The stones hide there hoping to inflict revenge on whoever tries to eat them. Beans, you see, are nature's most perfect food.

How would God respond to making a mistake? Would planets collide or mountains slide into the sea? Or would the ledger of all life simply remain out kilter until a series of small events forced that ledger back into balance again? It's probably the latter. After all, you don't want to call attention to your mistakes if you're an all-powerful being. Across 12 interconnected stories, Just Follow the Cat unravels the events that shape the life of Starling Prindle and the original mistake that started him on his search for the center of the universe. The stories are simultaneously whimsical and nihilistic. They are also poetic in an unconventional way. There are cats and shadows of cats in every story. The 12 stories are told to a woman who can't see, can't hear, and can't react. From beginning to end, her thoughts about what she hears remain a mystery. Or maybe it's more than that. Maybe it's more shrouded. More unknowable. Maybe her thoughts are a riddle surrounded by a mystery that's inside an enigma with the whole mess wrapped in bacon. Maybe. Just maybe she is like a cat who has entered her 10th life and is now content to simply listen. When I write, I try to use simple language and speak directly to the reader. My goal is to have the reader feel as if the story is being told only to them. And my hope is that reading these stories will create a casual and comfortable bond between the reader and the narrator - kind of like sitting across a table from each other, sipping morning coffee, and listening.

02 February - the memorable and the forgetten

12 parts Complete

On an unusually warm February morning, one million monkeys sit down in front of one million old fashioned typewriters and begin typing randomly. By chance, they create one perfect sentence that draws together four women from four different parts of Baltimore. It is the once in a generation month of the Lover's Moon - the month when the 28 days of February misalign completely with the phases of the moon. With no full moon rising throughout the month, those people who have failed to find love in their lives are able to see hope in the relative darkness of that rarest of all months. Instead, lies and hope collide and the plan for the day is disrupted when all one million monkeys become distracted by the sight of a premature spring emerging on the warmest February day in Baltimore history. As a result, love eludes the four women. One gives up. Two get bored. And one dies as her son evaporates into the ether that separates the memorable from the forgotten.
