Everyone on the planet Terran had been preparing for the apocalypse as an asteroid approached their world only for it to vanish out of nowhere just hours before impact. Now the humans of Terran are forced to live with the consequences of the actions they assumed would not matter in the face of the once imminent apocalypse while they wonder what truly prevented their doomsday. This collection of short stories follows different characters as they try to navigate the aftermath of an apocalypse that never even happened.

A homeless man discovers a mysterious box which transports him back to his childhood. On each side of the box, both inside and out, a new world reveals itself to him: He experiences another man's worst day of luck. An old, dying man befriends an alien creature and shares an inexplicable bond. A unique blanket helps a young woman in a time of crisis. Another man's grief of losing his dying wife is tempered by a ghostly haunting. The first manned mission to Mars reveals a personal past for one colonist. An Indian Brave concludes a ritual as a rite of passage to adulthood. The end of the world brings a woman and her ailing father together for the last time. A man has an opportunity to right one wrong from his past and realizes the true meaning of regret. Another man's senses are replaced one by one with something alien. A golfer in the aftermath of the apocalypse sets out on a quest to keep the game he loves alive. A conversation between two sides of one man's psyche reveals something in us all. A snowbound woman holds the fate of the world literally in her hands. Once all sides of the box are revealed, the homeless man discovers the promise of a new future built on memories from a past he never had. The Box Has Twelve Sides is a collection of thirteen stories all connected as visions given to a homeless man in search of his future. Their planet was forgotten--Destroyed, someone had told them. They were taken a very long time ago, taken and held down and beaten to submission. The more time they waste, the worst. One day they'd grow too weak to do anything--one day they wouldn't be able to even stand. Then, their leg broke. Moon thinks they broke more than that. And when they no longer felt it hurt, they knew they had waited too long to do anything. It was already too late. Until it really isn't. (In which you get hit by a car, punch someone in the face, and self-sign yourself as a caretaker to two aliens.)

Her brother was taken years ago, and only his body was brought back. Then Terra is taken. Soon she's suffering painful experimental procedures, before she's liberated by the Rebellion. Finishing her transformation, Terra grows wings and demands to fight. As her legend grows, the other Rebels start calling her "The Angel of Death." But Terra comes to learn that both sides of the war are using her in a greater game, and though she despises the State, Terra is determined to survive.
