When it comes to self-driving cars, there's one question that everyone wants answered:

If you push a nun and a baby into the street, which one will the car hit?

Of course, newly graduated Sam doesn't know anything about that. She's just happy that her first job out of college isn't mind-numbing data entry. But software and driving don't always mix well, and Sam starts to see that maybe dull jobs are the least of her problems.

Filled with recent-grad hijinks, in-office romance, and lots of in-jokes about the tech industry, Crash Test Canary is your sneak peak into the world of self driving cars.

If you want to learn about why Cruise had so many problems and why Waymo cars drive like your grandmother, this is the spot for you.

The Adventures of Morley and Boots: The crew of the Leapfrog travel randomly about the galaxy in search of unique lifeforms to trap & trade. Intra-galactic poaching is profitable, but risky - like when an Evil Intergalactic Empire accuses you of capturing their Goddess, and you don't even know which critter she is! End Game: In an alternate near-future Indochina, Imperial France still rules, much to the chagrin of the local Siamese. Ratana's brother is captain of a premiere league football team, and a hero to the Siamese - and when he is booted from the squad to make space for the son of a powerful nobleman, it sets off a chain of events that could result in the toppling of the Empire. Self-Assembly Required: Human civilization has been almost entirely destroyed by a catastrophic plague of nanites, but one city remains, hidden and protected by Hydra, a team of all-female nano/human hybrids. Is the arrival of a roguish, lone-wolf mercenary a sign that human civilization is recovering, or the event that could destroy the few remaining survivors? The Woman from Mars: The robotic crew of the Basilisk thought humans were gone, long gone. But when they are sucked back in space and time to Jupiter's moon Europa in 2552, they discover a Viking civilization with the technology to rebuild human civilization - assuming the woman from Mars can complete her mission. Blasted Futures is a short story collection. All of these works have been written for The Pub's SciFi Smackdown, a contest in which contestants write Science Fiction stories meeting the specifications laid out by the smackdown's host, @ForbiddenPlanet. "Oh my god, this Corvette is so fucking sexy." I ran my hand along the peeling red paint. It wasn't in the best condition, but a Corvette was a Corvette. "Can I drive it?" "There's no engine. We used it for parts," Drake said. My heart sank into my stomach, and I let out a wheeze. "You what?" "We were running low on funds, so we did what we had to do," Josiah said. "It never meant anything to us anyway." What the fuck? "How the hell can you call yourselves a racing team if you're willing to do that to one of the best-looking cars ever made?" I shook my head. "It's disgusting." "What? Racing?" Drake's mouth fell open. "Oh my god, no. We wanted a driver." I looked over at Josiah, then Drake. "I drive cars for a living, therefore I'm a driver. What's the confusion?" "You said you drove for RTR," Josiah said. I nodded. "Yeah, Roger Truscott Racing." "Oh no. Oh my god. Look, in our line of work, that means Real Time Robotics," Drake said. "Robotics? What the fuck is going on?" I asked. "You wouldn't happen to know much about combat robotics, would you?" Drake forced a smile, and it wasn't difficult to see the hope leave his eyes. *** Katie Moore is a controversial figure in the car racing world with several strikes against her. One, she is a female. Two, she is a female with opinions. And three, she is a female with opinions who thoroughly enjoys sharing them with no inhibition. A one-track mind (with a few side streets), all she wants is to win a race to shut everyone up about her mistakes and misfortunes. But when she's down on her luck, a team of nerds finds their way into her life, giving her an offer that she probably should refuse.

~ I put my foot down and drive to the first corner. The track is always wet at the start of the day as the water truck is able to go out and keep it that way, but by the end of the day all the water will have been used so it will be bone dry and that's when the real fun begins. I pull the hydro, the chrome shaft that's connected to my rear brakes, to lock the rear wheels so I can initiate a drift. I feather the throttle accordingly as to keep the car sideways and continue onto the next corner... This is it. Nothing else matters. Just me, my car, their car and the sound of tyres tearing rubber against the drying tarmac... ~ ~ "Laurie, you got something..." He trails off as his thumb brushes my lips enough to turn my head towards him. Before I know it, the space between us is closing and my body is frozen. His lips draw ever closer to mine and involuntarily, my back arches so my mouth presses against his. My lips burn with passion as I find myself unable to stop kissing him. My rational side kicks in and I pull myself away from him. What the hell am I doing? ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Laurie Williams is a wreck of a woman. Alcoholism and not giving a fuck are her two main personality traits. However, when her tightly knit friend group of girl car enthusiasts find a car club to become a part of, she starts to come to life. For a moment, she leaves her old life behind. But it always finds her again. On a downward hill spiral from the beginning, she loses friendships, relationships and even herself. The only thing keeping her afloat is her love for cars. Can she hold onto that love? Or will her former demons continue to ruin her? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
