The story begins with Erika Thrymson, a teenage girl who has been sent to Jorvik by her busy father. Erika is an independent loner at heart and almost prefers it. Which is why she's been sent to spend the summer on a remote island in the middle of the North Atlantic.
When arriving to Valedale Village, Erika feels lonely and out of place. During Erika's stay at Valedale Village, she volunteers at the delivery services and the stables for the summer where she'll work with the horses; a dream come true for many teenagers, but not for a girl who recently lost her best friend. The nature of Jarlaheim is a secret that few people know. It is a place of magic, mystery, and for Erika, intrigue, danger, and adventure.

Most characters and the world are by Rebecca Yarros, but a couple of characters are created by me. It is recommended that you read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame before reading this, but this may also be read without reading those books. Alex is now the leader of the druids after Elizabeth's passing, and Jorvik has been relatively peaceful at the moment. The dark riders haven't been seen in awhile and it is guessed they are recuperating. But Linda can sense that change is coming to Jorvik, she doesn't know how or when, but little do they know that it will shake all their worlds. A new girl has come to the Island, and after she witnesses the powers of the soul riders, it turns out she isn't as normal as they all thought she was. I love the soul riders from star stable and I thought it would be really cool to write about one of there adventures. I did not come up with these characters.
