Dearil Burrough is born with the symbol of death. But he is afraid of death. And so death followed him around. 

As a member of a clan blessed with a god's ichor, he's been taught over and over how he should die for the sake of the balance long distorted by the war between the god of light and the god of night. 

However, after witnessing his father kill himself in front of cheering people, the battle is no longer about saving the world. His battlefield now lies underneath his deep-seated hatred against the predetermined fate programmed in his system. 

He is meant to be victorious. 

But only on one battlefield.
