"The Desert Girl Knocks at the Gate of Darkness" is a fanfiction novel based on Fuyumi Ono's "The Twelve Kingdoms" series. It is not a new work written by Fuyumi Ono herself.
 It was exhibited at Comic Market in Japan in December 2019.

While there are no depictions of sexual acts, the novel does contain somewhat graphic monster and action scenes.

The story is tied to the contents of "Demon Child", "Shore at Dusk, Sky at Dawn", and the latest Japan-only publication "The Silver Ruins, Black Moon".

In the story, the kirin of the Kingdom of Tai disappears again, along with the King of Tai, Gyousou. In the Hakukei Palace, which governs the country's politics, a false king named Asen appears in place of King Gyousou. Sensing ominous developments in the Kingdom of Tai, an elite unit from the independent village of Kimin sets out to investigate. Yari, one of the members of this elite unit and the protagonist of this novel, is a new character introduced in "The Silver Ruins, Black Moon". Will she be able to uncover the secrets of the Kingdom of Tai?
