An American fiction novel set in the 1930s about a little girl with a mentally troubled mother and a black best friend in a small town in southern America who grows up and moves to Brooklyn in her 20s and begins secretly teaching a black school under Jim Crow law and eventually campaigns to end segregation in American schools.
