Book one of "What is Bought in Blood Must be Repaid" duology When a father dies, the family weeps. When a King dies, the kingdom wails. Alula, the Crown Princess of Alethium, led her entire life thinking that she would inherit the throne at her father's passing. At a year after The King died tragically in battle, her mother refuses to abdicate the throne. Under the new Queen, Alethium and its various statehoods are suffering, displacing citizens as surrounding countries encroach their borders. Alula must make her mother see reason, or see her mother overturned. The Queen of Alethium has different plans for her daughter. Alula will join this year's social season to find a husband, and the next King will be born of Alula's womb. There is a problem with this plan; not only does Alula not want to marry, but she happens to kill anyone who touches her bare skin. A life sequestered in the castle with a deadly power that cannot be revealed has left Alula fearing human connection, and placed upon the marriage market will only make her goal of changing Alethium for the better all the more difficult. Alula's life only looks grim until her mother makes the dire mistake of assigning her a personal guard- Tall, freckled, and handsome, Terran Juliano.
