"I need you." Carl's sobs are barely audible as he swallows the growing lump in his throat. I take a step closer to him, cupping his cheek with my hand before using my thumb to wipe away a few stray tears. He buries his head in my shoulder and I pull him closer to me, embracing him in a hug. He wraps his arms around me like his life depends on it, his cries muffled against my jacket. I kiss the side of his head, rubbing small circles in his back to calm him.
"Shh. You have me."
