A thousand years ago, Angelica Hale, or as Evie knows her- Mama Hale, was matched with a man who took away her eyesight because he did not want her looking at other men. A month after that incident, the soul string connecting them was cut, he was dead, and she was free.

Mama Hale quickly realised that although she could no longer see the rest of the world around her, she could feel people and the soul strings connecting them; so could her children.
