As Kai's time as a ninja, he always heard these comments and he couldn't do anything about it so he has to bottle his feelings whenever people say this. One day when he was on a mission with Cole to save some adventurous that got stuck in a narrow cave a disaster struck on Kai. After the mission Cole got all the thanks and Kai got none, Cole was the only one who truly understood what happened. He was force to live off the streets for years but when he came across a kid that remind Kai of the hardship of living on the streets, he just had to take him in as his own brother.
