If I tried, I'd break into a full fledged scream, and possibly end up handcuffed as well. I took many steps back, retreating from the source of toxicity, suppressing a pseudo feeling of guilt but being grasped by its hands so easily I could simply lunge at my boyfriend and tell him everything would be all right, that he had done the right thing, and that I was so proud of him.
But as much as I wished him to, he wasn't a child anymore, and I had ceased to be the girl he idealized.
The man pushed Asher's head into the vehicle, and he repeated "I love you" over and over, like a fresh mantra. I didn't doubt his words. But there were just a few things that still made sense to me, and his voice was in the past. A relic that was rooted in a better context.
